Post 5: In class essay

The movie that I watched was Zero dark thirty. This movie is about the CIA and more specifically one CIA agent named Maya tracking down Osama Bin Laden after the 911 terrorist attacks in New York city. This movie follows the journey of the CIA as they find out information about and ultimately kill Osama Bin Laden.
Of all the movies we previously watched this year which were “12 years a slave”, “Glory”, and “Smoke signals”. “12 years a slave” is the film that has the most in common with Zero dark thirty. It is most like 12 years a slave because like 12 years a slave, Zero dark thirty is based on a primary source but certain aspects of the movie were “dramatized” and “simplified” to make the movie not only more interesting to watch but also easier for the movie goers to understand and keep up with what is happening. If all aspects of the procedures and the work that went into finding Osama Bin Laden were shown anyone who is not a historian would have trouble keeping up with the and understanding things that are happening in the movie. Just like in 12 years a slave things were dramatized in Zero dark thirty to make the movie seem more appealing to everyday people so that they would not just think that it was just going to be a two hour boring movie about the logistics that went into finding Osama Bin Laden and ultimately killing him.
One of the main problems with the historical accuracy in Zero dark thirty was the torture scenes. According to a Washington post interview with a former CIA director who worked with the CIA from 2002-2009 the scenes of torture were greatly exaggerated. According to the CIA director not only were the torture scenes extremely exaggerated for example the interrogator putting a dog leash around the prisoner's neck and walking him around like a dog, also according to the CIA director people's arms were never hung from the roof as it was shown in the film. This was just put into the film to entertain the audience as Zero Dark Thirty is a Hollywood movie that wants to make money. Probably the most over exaggerated torture scene was the bucket of water being dumped non stop on the prisoner's head but in reality according to the CIA director small plastic water bottle were used slowly over the towel on the prisoner's head, not a giant bucket being dumped all at once with the risk of killing the prisoner that holds valuable information. While it is accurate that torture was used when trying to get information out of someone, the effectiveness of the torture in the movie was exaggerated. In the movie torture proved to be extremely effective in getting information out of people but realistically torture was not that effective in getting information.
Another inaccuracy with Zero dark thirty was how openly classified information was discussed. For example, when Maya was eating dinner the night the restaurant she was eating in got bombed just seconds before the bomb went off she was discussing classified information with another CIA agent in a very open restaurant where anyone could hear. The former CIA director simply said that this was laughable because no CIA agent would ever have such an open conversation about classified information. The last of the main historical accuracies was the demeanor and the way that the women killed in the suicide bombing in the army base behaved. This character was based on a CIA agent by the name of Jennifer. According to the CIA director Jennifer was a very serious women who would have never behaved the way that the actress in the movie portrayed her as a fun loving woman who was never serious.
All in all, “Zero Dark Thirty” is a movie that is based on a primary source but is dramatized to attract viewers. While some parts of Zero Dark Thirty were accurate like the way that the hunt for Osama Bin Laden was a 10 year marathon, and the way that the house that Osama Bin Laden was hiding in was shown with the giant walls surrounding it an three dozen people living inside, it contained many historical inaccuracies just like “12 years a slave”. Like 12 years a slave you can still learn many things from Zero Dark Thirty but it is not completely accurate and it contains some inaccuracies.

Radio technology

During the Great Depression radio prices drooped from $139 to only $47 in a span of four years. In the 30s people would invite their friends over just to listen to the radio like people invite friends over to watch TV now. Radios in the 1930s were only able to receive morse code and no any real voices or music. Even when speech through radios became possible morse code was still used until the 1990s. In the 1930s radios were 4 feet tall and the only large differences with radios today is that they only transmitter morse code. Now radios are portable and sound much clearer.

Propaganda

1. Propaganda a picture or video or words that works to convey a certain way of thinking.

2.Propaganda- information, ideas, or rumors deliberately spread widely to help or harm a person, group, movement, institution, nation, etc.

3. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-7jsJa5YaWremFlUFk1OVpDWUU/view

4. Describe and analyze pictures:

The first picture shows a woman wearing all red white and blue sleeping in a chair and it says wake up America civilization calls every man woman and child.

The 2nd picture shows a gorilla carrying a topless women into America from the ocean with destruction left behind while wearing a hat that says militarism.

The third pictures shows a giant man carrying a bloody knife destroying buildings with his bare hands.

5. I think that the artists was trying to convey the point that America is sleeping by showing a sleeping woman wearing red white and blue. And it shows that Americans should "wake up and go to the mayors committee.

The second picture is showing that if young men join the military and stop the evil monster that i militarism they will rescue beautiful women like the one in the painting.

The 3rd picture is saying that Americans should help defeat the giant by buying Liberty bonds.

6. The artist assumes that everyone in America will be reading the first poster because it li it includes every man woman and child.

The artist assumes that men will be looking at the 2nd picture because it includes a beautiful women to attract male viewers.

The artists assumes that wealthy American who will be willing to help the army will be looking at the third picture because the artists hopes that they will go buy liberty bonds.

7. I am kind of comfortable with the idea of tax dollars being spent on propaganda because of troops are needed for a war and the best way to convince people to help is through the media I believe it can be a good thing.

8. I think the federal government invested in propaganda so that people would volunteer for thae army and not have to  get drafted.

Hawaiian: The legend of Eddie Aikau

The perspective shown in the movie Hawaiian is the perspective of the Hawaiian people on imperialism. The Hawaiian people were not happy about imperialism. Once Hawaii was annexed many white tourists came into there beaches and acted like they were better than the Hawaiian people and began surf competitions and the Hawaiians did not feel respected as the citizens of this island. The sport of surfing that Eddie loved so much was taken away from him by the new white immigrants who came in and took over the beaches of Hawaii for surfing competitions that Eddie among other Hawaiian surfers were unfairly not allowed to compete in. The Hawaiian people were still not happy about imperialism in the mid-20th century even though it happened almost 100 years before.

How do you analyze a political cartoon?

I think the best way to analyze a political cartoon is to not look at things from  a literal perspective and to analyze what they could mean. For example a large bag of money crushing someone could mean the taxes being too high. Also another good way to analyze a political cartoon is to look not only at the mani part but also to the things around it that could give it a hidden meaning.

One point that I didn't write to analyze a political cartoon is actually analyzing it that the artist can use something more familiar to a person so that the reader can better understand what is happening. Also the artist may exccagerate a physical characteristic of  the person in the cartoon to make a point.

This political cartoon is about the Cuban missile crisis and it shows the USA represented by Uncle Same anxiously waiting to see what will happen and the Soviet union is watching from across the ocean.

Civil Rights Act of 1964

1. This law prohibited discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.

2. I do believe that these behaviors still take place because people are still racist and it is seen in person and on the news how people with different skin colors or sex can sometimes me treated differently then people who are white.

3. There is not really much that an be done against issues of racism because it is very difficult to change the way a person thinks about a certain group of people, also laws have been passed fro everyone to be treated equally and there is not much mire that can be done when it is already illegal.

4. I think  that this field trip will be very informative and interesting to be able to see the park where the children's march took place and see how different things are compared to the movie.

Factory fires

Between 1880 and 1925 3,985,061 people died in factory fires and there are many factors that caused all these deaths. One factor is that the factory wasn't ready for a fire there were no sprinklers on the roof(which were added later) and there were no fire extinguishers so when there was a fir there were no materials in the factory to help them put it out. Another problem that was occurring was because the factories were not prepared for fires the fires would often spread and even the fire escape would catch on fire so there was no way for people to escape.  Eventually factory fire laws came into existence, the factory fire laws fell into two classes the first one concerns the safe guarding of the worker and the second protects his life in case of sudden peril.

Progress

1. Progress is defined as positive improvements made in a certain amount of time.

2. 1890-1920 was known as the progressive era. Began as social movement to political movement. Problems could have been solved by providing good education, and good work spaces.

3. Progressive reforms liked to make the problems known not really solve them.

4. Essential goals: Fighting corporate greed, womens rights, strengthening govrnment
Good goals: Conservation of environment, rail road regulations
Not a good idea: Prohibition

Future

1. Some of the weirdest predictions that I found were that the letters c, x and q will be removed from the alphabet because they will become unnecessary. Another was that rats and mice would be exterminated and that the only animals remaining would be in zoos. Another prediction is that spouses would be able to control one anothers thoughts through a pill so that they couldnt think for themselves. Another prediction is that the way that children would learn was by going to school and sitting while a wire connects to their head teaching them everything they need to know. A prediction that almost everyone has heard of is the flying car which was also being predicted.

2. Most of the predictions for the future were a wish list like flying cars and not having to study in school because people would hope that the time coming would be better than they it is now.

3. Some of the predictions that have come true are self driving cars, video chatting, fake meat, and smart phones. Some predictions that are very out if reach are frog people living in the ocean, whales being tames to be forms of transportation in the ocean, and fire fighters will wear batwings as transportation through the sky.

4. A trend that I see is that almost all the predictions are for convenience to make people lives easier like self-driving car so that they wouldnt have to bother steering and focusing on the road.

5. I predict that there will be flying cars. I also think that when you watch a movie you will also be able to smell what is happening and not just see it. Also you will not have to go to the supermarket to get groceries they would be delivered.

Parks and zoos

In the late 1800s to early 1900s as more and more people began to move to large cities there was named for nature in these people's lives, Parks and Zoos began to appear as a way for people to spend the day with their family. Parks were designed in a way that people could escape from their everyday lives and just relax in nature so that they could forget all their troubles and just be alone with nature. Zoos were designed so that people could learn more about the animals that they don’t usually see which are not found where they are from. Zoos were also made to attract more tourist to cities.

In the late 1800s when zoos were first beginning to be introduced, cages for the animals had bars and were mainly if not only made of concrete. Which in my opinion not only hurt the animals physical health but also hurt its mental health. They were also very small and were often indoors because people thought that if the animals experienced the cold they would die. The cages did not allow much space for movement and often stressed out the animals, cages stayed like this until 1970 when the idea of making a habitat look like its habitat in the wild came to be. Zoos were originally in the middle of big cities so that tourist would go visit them but as people realized that the pollution and noise from the city affected the animals negatively most zoos were moved to smaller cities close to the big city where the animals could have more space. Mainly the larger animals were affected by the lack of space and sunlight like the Elephants. At one point there was even a Giraffe in a zoo which became a huge tourist attraction selling a lot of merchandise but when it died just 6 months after it arrived no one even noticed or cared.

During the war, many animals suffered and even died because of lack of food mainly the carnivores because it was so difficult to find meat for them to eat. Polar bears were mainly surviving off of fish heads because that was all they had to feed them with, and a man came and killed a polar bear because he said it wasn't fair that they were getting meat and he wasn't even though the polar bears were living off of fish heads. The way that the zoos of this time would get their animals was they would go out to the wild and corner a herd of what ever animal they wanted. They would then remove usually the babies or the “pretty ones” from their family and fly them back to their zoo where they would live the rest of their life in a small cage surrounded by bars that looked more like a prison than an animal habitat. The animal which was removed from its family would often become depressed because of the drastic change in its life style, from being in its natural habitat with unlimited space to run, to being in a small barred cage about the size of a classroom without any space to run or hunt.

Another type of zoo that was seen in this time was the “Human Zoo.” Which was literally a zoo whose only inhabitants was humans where people would pay to watch mainly Senegalese, Nubia's, Danomears, Egyptians, Laplanders, Amerindians, and Koreans were mainly the people who lived in the zoos. Major cities with human zoos were Hamburg, London, Brussels, Chicago, Geneva, and Barcelona. As bad as it sounds men would often enjoy going to these Human zoos just so that they could see the African-American tribes women walking around naked. The most well known cause of a Human being kept in a zoo is the story of Ota Benga who was bought in Louisiana and kept in the Bronx Zoo. When the zoo was closed Ota could do whatever he wanted but when the zoo was open he was forced to do one of the most insulting things I have ever heard, he was forced to live in the Monkey habitat and was often forced to carry the monkeys to show visitors. Otas dream when he finally got out of the Bronx Zoo was to be able to one day got back to Africa but when he found out that wouldn't be possible he committed suicide.

Another new idea popping up was parks. The most famous park which was designed to give people a break from the chaotic city life is Central Park which lies right in the middle of New York City's Central Park. Which now a days I cant imagine going to New York City without having Central Park to get away from the crazy city life. Frederick Law Olmstead was hired to design Central park because he and his colleague won a competition to design the park. Frederick Law Olmstead believed that humans need a place to go to be with nature, that's why he designed a park right in the middle of one of the busiest cities in the world. Frederick and his colleague designed Central Park in the way that parks of time were designed and are still designed today, they designed it so that it would block out the background sites and sounds from the city so that people can have an escape from the city where they could be one with nature.

Another practice that became common was the combination of park and zoos. It was fairly common to find a very large park with a zoo inside combining education about animals with connecting with nature. The most famous example of this is the Central park zoo which lies right in the middle of Central Park.

MLK Speaker

The speaker Peggy Wallace Kennedy was the daughter of former Alabama governor George Wallace. George is famous for saying the line "segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever." Peggy grew up hearing these ideas of racism. Something she said that really shocked me was when she said that three african american men were trying to vote and they were beaten by Alabama police officers.
